Google shuts down Gizmo5 VOIP

Google has shut down its standalone Gizmo5 voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) service. Google bought the startup company 16 months ago. Google had integrated Gizmo5 voip functionality into their gmail system. Therefore gmail users are able to make voip calls direct from their inbox. Now they decided to focus their efforts and resources on other voice innovations and expect to roll out a Google Voice client for Honeycomb tablets. While many Honeycomb tablets will likely lack a phone radio for making calls, Google Voice can be useful for sending and receiving SMS messages and managing voicemails.

After launching a telephony platform and landing Yahoo as one of its first clients, Jajah has scored another victory by being selected by Gizmo5, formerly known as SIPphone, to manage some divisions of its voip service. With the Gizmo5 and Jajah partnership, Gizmo5 will be using the Jajah platform to handle all call termination and some other custom services like customer care and billing.

How does backdoor dialing work

Gizmo5 has connections using VOIP (voice over IP) to many carriers. Our servers are programmed to identify backdoor dialing calls by their special prefix and transmit them over VOIP. This bypasses the traditional phone network and the associated toll charges making the call free to the caller. If a telephone number is part of our program there is no charge to call it.Additionally, once you call a number using the Backdoor Dialing program, the person you called can call you back directly on your computer, by simply dialing the Caller ID number they see when you called them. Their call will only cost the price of a local phone call and they?ll be able to call you anytime you?re logged into Gizmo5, on any computer, anywhere in the world!

Backdoor Dialing

Approximately 11% of US telephones, including mobile numbers and land lines from carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc., are connected via VoIP. Working with telecom partners we are now making it possible to dial these numbers without going through the traditional phone system.

This means you can call certain mobile and land line numbers from any computer connected to the net and talk for free. Because these calls are bypassing the traditional phone network entirely there is no per minute fee or other charge for the caller regardless of where they call from.

How to do backdoor dialing:

  • Download and install Gizmo5 for PC/Mac/Lin.
  • Dial 0101 + 10 digit US telephone number.
