Rebtel said that the company has lowered the rates effective immediately for all calls to land lines and mobiles in Chile from 19.9 cents to 13.5 cents. Similarly, the old rate to landlines was 2.8 cents and the new one now is 2.2 cents. This is in support and sympathy for the earthquake victims of Chile and their loved ones abroad. The reduced rates are available for existing as well as new Rebtel users.

VoIP provider Vopium said it will offer its overseas mobile VoIP service as a white-label feature for carriers and other service providers. Vopium has added several advanced features to its VoIP service, which aims to keep international mobile calls affordable for users. The Danish company released an upgraded version of its iPhone application that includes instant messaging, rounding out its messaging support. Vopium now provides IM on the Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile platforms in addition to the iPhone and the iPod touch. Symbian and Java versions will be released shortly. The iPhone applications also enables free calls to Skype and Google Talk users in addition to other Vopium customers. Vopium has also added a dedicated VoIP client that enables calls over Wi-Fi and 3G networks without an embedded VoIP client. Targeted at international carriers, Vopium works as a prepaid service that the user “tops up” either via the company’s Web site or the onboard phone application.

Toktumi, a San Francisco-based VoIP startup, has their version 2.0 of their company’s mobile VoIP app Line2 approved by apple. The app allows you to call and receive phone calls over both 3G and WiFi networks. It cost 99cents. It allows you to receive calls straight to your mobile phone over a cellular network even if you don’t have 3G or Wi-Fi coverage. It comes with its own features such as call waiting, conference calling, call transfer and even voice mails — in other words, the service is like a virtual second line on your phone. The service costs $14.95 a month for unlimited calls in the U.S. and Canada. This is a blow to Google who did not get approved by Apple for a similar product – Google Voice.
